Cette série met en scène ce courant juif orthodoxe à proximité de son centre névralgique new-yorkais le 770, synagogue du grand Rabbi Mena’hem Mendel Schneerson, guide spirituel du mouvement, dans l’optique de dissiper les préjugés qui entourent ces “hommes en noir”. Souvent perçus comme extrémistes, cette famille se distingue des autres mouvements orthodoxes par son ouverture au monde extérieur et sa volonté de respecter les commandements du Très-Haut dans un esprit de joie, de ferveur, de partage et de don de soi. Comme l’expliquent le photographe Sacha Goldberger et son co-auteur Ben Bensimon : “Par ces images, nous avons voulu poser sur la religion juive un regard positif, poétique, spirituel et parfois humoristique. En photographiant ces femmes et ces hommes nous avons pu observer leur capacité à l’autodérision et leur aptitude à faire partager leur joie.”

This series explores the Orthodox Jewish Hasidic movement (also known as Chabad) around its New York nerve centre, the 770, the synagogue of the great Rabbi Mena’hem Mendel Schneerson, the movement’s spiritual guide. The goal was to challenge preconceived notions surrounding the “men in black”, often seen as extremists while in fact differing from other orthodox movements by its openness to the outside world and its desire to respect God’s commandments in a spirit of joy, enthusiasm, generosity and selflessness. Sacha Goldberger and his co-author Ben Bensimon say: “Through these pictures, we wanted to take a positive, poetic, spiritual and sometimes funny look at the Jewish religion. By taking pictures of these men and women we were able to observe their ability to laugh at themselves and their capacity to share joy.”
